In Oman, TheWeek is vrij, 48 pagina, alle-kleur, onafhankelijk wekelijks gepubliceerd van Muscateldruif in het Sultanaat van Oman. Werd de eerste vrije krant van Oman gelanceerd in Maart 2003 en is nu gaan verzamelen wat om het grootste lezerspubliek voor om het even welke publicatie in Oman wordt verondersteld te zijn. Mej. Mohana Prabhakar is de leidende redacteur van de publicatie. The Week wordt wereldwijd gecontroleerd door BPA, die zijn omloop zoals zijnd een wekelijks gemiddelde van 50.300 heeft verklaard.

A strong and independent media is an asset to any society and, over the past 37 years, Oman has worked hard to build credibility both domestically and internationally.
Before 1970 Oman’s media was virtually nonexistent; today its coverage extends via satellite and the internet to every part of the globe.
The non-government media – set up and run by Oman’s private sector – has an important function, not least in the challenge it poses to the longer established and more traditional channels of communication. Its role has expanded since the promulgation of Royal Decree No. 95/2004 on the Law on Private Radio and Television Stations when private radio stations and TV channels joined the ranks of Oman’s privately owned press.

Sultanate of Oman Radio has made impressive advances in terms of its technical resources as well as in the quality of program content. It now broadcasts 24 hours a day and its transmissions can be accessed throughout Oman as well as around the world, either through its satellite transmissions over the airwaves, or from its website.

Sultanate of Oman Radio has four main services:1. the general Arabic service,
2. the Youth service,
3. the Holy Qur’an program,
4. and the English service.
Most of the material is locally produced with each program schedule running for three months. There are four different schedules a year with special timetables for the month of Ramadan, National Day, Eid al Fitr and Eid al Adha. Its transmissions also include live coverage of the National Day celebrations, Sultan Qaboos’s speech to the annual session of the Council of Oman (Majlis Oman), His Majesty’s meetings with members of the public during the annual Royal Tours, and the activities of the Consultation Council (Majlis A’Shura), including statements delivered by ministers to the Council and the members’ subsequent discussions on them.

Programmes on development topics accounted for 28.09% of the total number of broadcast hours.
Religious, cultural and educational programmes together totalled 34.02%, while sports and youth, children’s programmes and entertainment accounted for more than 16%; news programmes accounted for almost 20% of the total number of broadcast hours.
There are three 1-hour news bulletins a day at 0700, 1600 and 2300 hours, two local news broadcasts from 0700-0715 and from 1400-1430 hours, plus 2 minute headlines on the hour at other times.

Sultanate of Oman Radio played a major role in covering the elections for the Consultation Council’s (Majlis A’Shura) sixth term (2008-2011) in October 2007, relaying live reports of the activities of election committees in the Sultanate’s governorates and regions, as well as live interviews with voters as election results in the wilayats came in. The discussion and public participation programs broadcast live on air played an important part in charting the large number of citizens, particularly women, who took part in the elections process, as well as highlighting the efficiency and transparency of the election process.
2. The Youth service
(Transmits on FM 100 Mhz in Muscat, and on different wavelengths elsewhere in the country).
The Youth service is one of Oman Radio’s most successful services. It is presented by trained Omanis with its widely varied program content tailored specifically to reflect the interests of the country’s youth. Young people are given the opportunity to express their concerns and participate in a wide range of programs, with the result that the service attracts large numbers of young listeners.
The Youth service broadcasts on the FM band for eleven hours a day - from 1 pm till midnight. The service covers all Oman’s governorates and can also be received by satellite and via the internet.

The service broadcasts 18 hours a day, from 6.00 am to midnight on the FM band. It transmits cultural and musical programs, as well as programs on tourism, progress and development, health, the sciences and other topics, including Omani politics and heritage.
The English service broadcasts for a total of over 6,500 hours a year.
